We all know this year has been challenging, to say the least, but it’s definitely been a rollercoaster for the Contracts market. If you told me at the beginning of this year that IR35 would be postponed to 2021, we would be working remotely for most of the year and there would be hiring freezes, I would never have believed you. However, here we are, and although there is still uncertainty, many of us have adopted the ‘keep calm and carry on’ approach (which isn’t always easy with a toddler in the ‘office!’)
There is good news on the horizon for the Contracts market, though. According to new research by Coople, 27% of firms in the UK are reconsidering the role that contractors have in their business, meaning temporary work is set to surge. Currently one in six (15%) of firms rely on a flexible workforce with approximately 1.5 million contractors in the UK today.
Coople reported that the constantly shifting market conditions created by Covid-19 have encouraged a new reliance on contractors. This is music to our ears, right?
There is, however, work to do. 50% of management heads and HR leaders who currently hire contractors don’t understand the rights and benefits flexible workers are entitled to. The biggest gaps in knowledge were around pay and holiday with over a third believing contractors aren’t eligible for holiday pay and slightly fewer (30%) believing casual workers aren’t eligible for the minimum wage.
A survey conducted by Qdos highlighted that 75% of contractors do not have faith in their employer / client to determine IR35 status.
